How WhosWhoZoo compares

Most alternatives store your notes on their servers — or, at best, on a server you have to run yourself. That's not the only difference.

The question that ends most comparisons for confidentiality-bound professionals: can the company read what you wrote? For every tool below except WhosWhoZoo and Monica self-hosted, the answer is yes. Not because they're careless — because their architecture requires it.

Honest tradeoffs. Choose the tool that fits your actual priorities.

Claude already has free memory

If you already use Claude, you might wonder why you'd need this at all. Claude's own memory is real and genuinely editable by Topic. But it lives on Anthropic's servers, under Anthropic's retention and training settings — not yours² — with no per-person structure and no export. If convenience matters more to you than owning the file, Claude memory is free and already there. WhosWhoZoo trades that convenience for data that's actually yours.

Setup takes real effort

You need Cloudflare, Anthropic, and OpenAI accounts. The setup wizard walks you through it — paste a key, test it, next — but it's ~20 minutes, not 2. Those 20 minutes buy you API-key privacy, memory you explicitly approved, and notes that survive the app. ChatGPT memory is zero minutes to set up — but what it remembers stays managed inside ChatGPT, rather than as source files you own outright.

No automatic enrichment

Dex and Clay pull LinkedIn, Twitter, and email data automatically. WhosWhoZoo doesn't — you write what goes in. That's the privacy model, but if passive enrichment is your priority, Dex is better at it.

Not in the App Store

Add WhosWhoZoo to your home screen from Safari or Chrome and it works exactly like a native app — your own icon, full screen, voice mode, handsfree sessions, everything. What you don't get is App Store discovery or automatic system updates. ChatGPT has a polished App Store presence if that distribution matters to you.

Solo developer project

There's one person building this. No team, no enterprise SLA, no 24/7 support desk. The flip side: if Hans disappears, your notes don't — they're in your own Cloudflare account, and the code is MIT on GitHub, so the app doesn't disappear either. The tool's survival is structurally irrelevant to your data.

You manage the API bill

Anthropic, OpenAI, and ElevenLabs bill your accounts directly, so you pay for what you actually use. That starts at a few dollars a month and climbs as your memory grows, because every question re-sends everything you've written — a heavily-used install can reach $15–25/month. The app shows your running total and lets you cap daily spend. Monica cloud and Dex have predictable flat monthly fees.

Monica for non-technical self-hosters

If you want self-hosted but don't need AI, Monica is mature, open source, and free. It handles contacts and reminders well. It just doesn't answer questions conversationally.

¹ ChatGPT consumer accounts (free and Plus) may use conversations to improve OpenAI's models by default. Opt out under Settings → Data Controls → Improve the model for everyone. This does not apply to the Anthropic and OpenAI APIs, which are how WhosWhoZoo reaches Claude and GPT models — API traffic is not used for training.

² Claude Free, Pro, and Max consumer accounts (the Claude.ai product) can use your conversations to improve Anthropic's models, but only if you switch it on — Model Improvement is off unless you enable it in Settings → Privacy (checked September 2026). Conversations flagged for safety review may still be used regardless of that setting. This is separate from the Anthropic API — see footnote 1.

Dex, Mem.ai, and Claude memory storing data on their servers is not a criticism — it's how these products are built. It only matters if cloud storage of your notes is professionally or personally disqualifying for you.
